In a landmark piece of legislation, the Federal Government deemed that because sleep is a life-sustaining activity then individuals without homes should not be criminally charged for sleeping in public. This is life-changing news for many individuals across the country. Too many individuals at The Open Door Shelter have dealt with such circumstances, only making it harder for them to find homes and employment.
According to an official statement, Vanita Gupta, the head of the Civil Rights Division said,
“Criminally prosecuting those individuals for something as innocent as sleeping, when they have no safe, legal place to go, violates their constitutional rights.”
